Moving Checklist for Edmonton Moves

Get a moving quote and book your movers. Month-end dates and summer weekends book up first. Start a quote
If you rent, check your lease for the notice you must give, and give it in writing.
Go room by room and decide what to sell, donate or throw out. Every box you skip saves time on moving day.
Measure big furniture and compare it with the doorways, stairs and hallways at the new place.
Start a moving folder for quotes, receipts, the lease or sale papers and the new address.
Keep every moving receipt. If the move brings you at least 40 km closer to a new job or school, some costs may be tax deductible. Check the CRA rules.
Moving with kids? Contact the new school about registration.

Living in a condo or apartment? Book the service elevator at both buildings, and ask about deposits and time limits.
Set up Canada Post mail forwarding to the new address.
Book electricity, natural gas and water to stop at the old home and start at the new one on moving day.
Book internet and TV setup at the new home. Install dates can be weeks away.
Get boxes, tape and packing paper. Count your boxes
Start packing what you rarely use: off-season clothes, books, decor and spare bedding.
Tell your home or tenant insurance provider your move date and new address.
Arrange care for kids and pets on moving day.

Change your address with the CRA, your bank, your employer and your credit card companies.
Update or cancel subscriptions and deliveries that go to the old address.
Plan parking for the moving truck at both homes. Ask the building manager, or check the street signs for limits.
Plan for what movers usually do not carry: propane tanks, gasoline, paint and cleaning chemicals. Use them up or take them to a City of Edmonton Eco Station.
Start using up frozen and pantry food.
Refill prescriptions, and transfer them if you are changing pharmacies.
Return borrowed and library items, and pick up dry cleaning and repairs.

Confirm the date, arrival time and both addresses with your movers.
Pack everything except what you use every day. Label each box with its room on two sides.
Empty dresser drawers of anything heavy or breakable.
Pack a first-night box: bedding, towels, toilet paper, chargers, medication, a kettle and snacks.
Set aside passports, jewellery, keys and important papers to carry yourself.
Empty the fuel out of the lawn mower and other gas-powered tools.
Arrange the key handover with your landlord, realtor or new building.

Empty, defrost and clean the fridge and freezer at least 24 hours before the move.
Disconnect and drain the washer. A gas dryer or gas stove should be disconnected by a licensed gas fitter.
Confirm the elevator bookings and loading door times at both buildings.
Take photos of the TV and computer cables before you unplug them.
Pack the rest of the kitchen. Keep out a few plates, cups and one pan.
Plan easy meals and drinks for moving day.
Clear a path to the door, and stack packed boxes out of the walkways.

Update the address on your Alberta driver's licence and vehicle registration at a registry agent.
Update your address with the Alberta Health Care Insurance Plan.
Test the smoke and carbon monoxide alarms.
Find the main water shut-off and the electrical panel.
Unpack the kitchen and bedrooms first. The rest can wait.
Bought the home? Change the locks or reset the door codes.
Flatten boxes for recycling, or pass them on to someone else who is moving.
